Bio
Gaara was born and raised in the village of Suna/Sand, in the country of Wind. Gaara was an outcast, and that fate was chosen for him before he was born, when his father enlisted the help of the village elders, and implanted a demon raccoon-dog into his unborn son. His father did this with the hope of creating a powerful weapon for his village, but when his wife didn’t survive the child-birth, he started to realize that maybe he had made a mistake.

The demon, Shukaku, is a psychotic killer at best, and a psychotic killer with a bad sense of humor at worst, but he provides Gaara with a near ultimate defense, in the form of sand. The sand is kept in a gourd that Gaara carries with him wherever he goes, and when Gaara is in danger of any harm, the sand forms a nearly impenetrable barrier around him. Wherever Gaara goes, the sand is called to him. He has no control over this fact.

As a young child, Gaara faces cruelty by the words of others, and isolation. The other children are afraid of him, even when he tries to apologize for the violence his sand sometimes creates. His father pays no attention to him and his siblings are as afraid of him as the other children. The only person who shows even a little kindness to Gaara is Yashamaru, Gaara’s uncle.

One night, Yashamaru finds Gaara trying to hurt himself. Gaara wishes to know what pain feels like, but the sand protects him time and again without fail. Yashamaru tries to comfort Gaara by telling him of the love in his sand. He tells Gaara that because his mother died so that he could be born, it proves the great love she must have had for him, and that must be why the sand protects him. Love is having someone to protect. Gaara tell Yashamaru he loves him, and happy moments abound (but not for long).

Later that night, Yashamaru accepts a mission from Gaara’s father to hunt and kill Gaara (charming). Gaara is alone, sad, and full of rage, having failed his most recent attempt to befriend the other children. When he senses a harmful presence, he either cannot or does not stop the sand when it reached out and severely/fatally wounds his attacker. Tears streaming down his face, Gaara moves to identify his attacker and is absolutely horrified to see that his uncle had just attempted to kill him.

When Gaara asks him why, Yashamaru says that he could never love Gaara, because Gaara was a monster who had killed his sister by being born. Gaara breaks inside a little (well… a lot), and carves the kanji “ai” (love) into his forehead, perhaps as a reminder of what took place, and to signify his ignorance and disbelief of what love really is.

At the age of 13, Gaara’s sole purpose in life to kill whomever he feels like killing. He is blood-thirsty and more than a little unbalanced. Shukaku torments him, and Gaara cannot sleep for fear that the demon will take control of his body completely. Gaara does not know what his reason for living is, but he rationalizes that other people live to die by his hand, so he lives to kill them, and to add to the blood in his sand.

Gaara, of course, undergoes a great change when he meets Uzumaki Naruto. Well, he doesn’t really meet Naruto, so much as he tries to kill Naruto. Gaara was trying to fight Uchiha Sasuke, and he had already caused serious harm to Haruno Sakura. Both of these individuals are friends and teammates of Naruto’s, and Naruto does NOT take kindly to his teammates being threatened.

Naruto fights a long and hard battle with Gaara, who gradually undergoes the transformation into Shukaku, by closing eyes and falling asleep. Gaara (or maybe Shukaku?) is confused by Naruto’s strength and will to fight. Naruto tells him that he fights to protect his “precious people,” and he won’t stop until he has saved them. He says that without his friends, he might have been just as lonely as Gaara, and things would have turned out differently.
Of course, this is where Naruto’s ability to change people kicks in, and Gaara has a number of flashbacks, in which he recalls his childhood and his betrayal by Yashamaru and his father. The battle ends and if Gaara isn’t broken once again by the emotional anxiety he just suffered, then he sure is when Naruto somehow finds the strength to drag himself across the battlefield to where Gaara is and tell him that he’s not alone.

Two and a half years later, Gaara has filled his father’s position as head of the village. His outlook on life and his opinion of humanity has changed for the better, and he admits that he owes it all to Uzumaki Naruto. No longer a senseless killer, he works hard to gain the respect of his people, because ultimately, his purpose in life is to protect his village, and everyone in it.

Personality: It’s fairly obvious that Gaara has lived a life of dark anxiety and mental instability. He could have been classified as psychotic for several years, at least.

Even though his personality has brightened, he hasn’t undergone any spectacular outward changes. He’s not unfeeling, but stoic. He’s not necessarily unresponsive, or indifferent, but quiet. He speaks when he needs to.

He’s also not very affectionate, but that’s nothing more than a product of years of emotional abuse. That, and he’s generally out of practice, I guess. In any case, Gaara doesn’t actively seek out human contact, as solitude is familiar to him.

As for an interesting fact about Gaara, his name is composed of kanji that mean “a demon who only loves himself,” and his mother chose that name because she hated and resented the fact that her life would be sacrificed so he could live. The name “Gaara” represents the ideology of destroying everyone around you to protect yourself.
